Research Focus
Studies in our laboratory are focused around various cellular and molecular mechanisms by which micronutrients such as selenium alter the host response and immune function in response to oxidative stress caused by environmental toxicants and pathogens. We are interested in learning more about the role of a unique monooxygenase called MIOX in health and disease, with particular relevance to diabetes. Using the MIOX-/- mice in-vitro cell cultures, we are making an effort to understand its role as a regulator of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Studies are also focused around the transcriptional regulation of MIOX and the regulation of its activity by ROS.
